Our Story

The Studio

Where architecture meets intention. A team of designers, thinkers, and makers committed to shaping the built environment of Long Island with care and purpose.

Founded 2004

Building for the Island We Call Home

Harlow & Stone was founded with a clear belief: that great architecture grows from a deep understanding of place. Long Island is where we live, where we raise our families, and where we've spent over two decades learning every nuance of its landscapes, communities, and building traditions.

Our studio operates at the intersection of contemporary design thinking and local knowledge. We understand the light that comes off the Sound, the way salt air weathers materials, the rhythm of village life, and the expectations of clients making significant investments in their homes and businesses.

We are not a satellite office of a Manhattan firm. We are here. Available, invested, and committed to the long term relationships that produce the best work.

01

Context First

Every project responds to its site, its climate, and its community. We don't import trends. We design from the ground up, literally.

02

Rigorous Simplicity

Good design removes the unnecessary. We pursue clarity in form, honesty in materials, and spaces that feel effortless even when the details are deeply considered.

03

Built to Last

Coastal environments demand durability. We specify materials and systems that perform beautifully over decades, not just on move in day.

We'd Love to Hear Your Story

Every project begins with listening. Tell us what you're envisioning and we'll share how our studio can help.

Start the Conversation

How We Work

Our Process

A clear, collaborative approach that keeps you informed and involved at every stage. No surprises, no guesswork, just thoughtful progress toward your vision.

Phase 01

Discovery & Vision

We begin with a deep conversation about how you live, what you value, and what you're hoping to achieve. We visit the site, study the context, review any existing conditions, and begin shaping a shared vision for the project.

Typical duration: 2 to 4 weeks

Phase 02

Concept Design

Using sketches, mood boards, 3D renderings, and preliminary floor plans, we explore design directions that respond to your goals and the site's potential. This is where the big ideas take shape and we align on direction before investing in detailed documentation.

Typical duration: 4 to 8 weeks

Phase 03

Design Development

The approved concept is refined into detailed drawings, material specifications, and technical documentation. We coordinate with structural engineers, MEP consultants, and landscape designers to ensure every system works in harmony.

Typical duration: 6 to 12 weeks

Phase 04

Permitting & Approvals

We navigate the full permitting process with local municipalities, including zoning board appearances when needed. Our familiarity with Long Island's regulatory landscape helps avoid common delays and keeps your project on schedule.

Typical duration: 4 to 10 weeks

Phase 05

Construction & Installation

During construction, we remain your advocate. Regular site visits, coordination with contractors, and careful oversight of material installations ensure the design intent is carried through to the finished product.

Typical duration: varies by scope

Phase 06

Reveal & Beyond

The final walkthrough is one of our favorite moments. We ensure every detail meets the standard before handoff, coordinate professional photography, and remain available for any adjustments as you settle into your new space.

Your project is never truly finished to us
